Topic Idea:
I have Native American heritage in my family so I think I want to do something regarding the history of Native Americans.

Development:
I want to do something unique, but also significant. Also I want it to be relevant to a possible school curriculum. There are many parts of Native American culture that I would love to research, that wouldn't be appropriate for school.

I think I will do the Trail of Tears. My only worry is being unoriginal. Though I don't think anyone else in the class will be doing anything similar.

The thought just came to me in class! My question will be, "What was it like for the who walked the "Trail of Tears"?"

Dr. Lee said my question was good, sweet and simple. I was worried that my question would be to simple but he said that he feels I could even expand on it further.

I found so many personal accounts from the trail of tears. In the 1930's the Federal Writers Project, the same people who documented the slave narratives, also documented stories, often from relatives, about the people who actually walked the trail of tears.

Pre-writing:
There is so much to write about!!! I have to narrow it down so I think i will edit my question to, "What was it like for those who endure the journey across the harsh lands from their ancestral to the Oklahoma territory by way of the Trail of Tears?"

Outline:
  1. Introduction:
    1. Hook line: Time setter, Jacksonian Era
    2. Question
  2. Historical Context:

    2. Mary Hill: Main Journey, Over all experiences, Deaths, Sickness, Walking the Distance
    3. Josephine Usray Lattimer: Example of the deaths of a person taken ill
  4. Collaboration:
    1. John G. Burnett: Outside perspective of the whole event.
  5. Conclusion:
    1. Synthesize, don't summarize!
    2. Answer to question
    3. Revelation

During Writing:
As I was writing historical context I realized that the time prior to the actual removal was really important also, so I again edited my question to fit.

What was is actually like for those who had to endure being forced from their ancestral lands and the torturous journey across harsh terrain from the eastern states to the Oklahoma Territory?

Ta-Da! Here It Is:

Post Writing:
There were so many different things I could talk about but I chose to focus on just the weather and living conditions. There was also the treatment from the soldiers, some good some bad, the efforts that some went to to keep spirits up, there was a story about how a whole group of people decided to die rather than to leave. This paper could have been much, much longer, if I had more time. I could write a small book with all the information!
